The Lycée Fran?ais Charles de Gaulle wishes to appoint: Freelance Reference Writers/Translators for UK and US University applications.

Positions to be filled: June 2019

Role: to prepare university references in English from French and English source material

The Lycée Fran?ais Charles De Gaulle is seeking additional freelance writers/translators to create references in English for students applying to UK and US universities. The successful candidates will be required to produce references that adhere to UCAS and our school’s guidelines, using documents in French and English supplied by teachers and students. An excellent level of English is required as well as a very high level of French comprehension in order to be to be able to capture all the nuances of the original French documents. The work will be undertaken between mid-June and the end of August. Occasionally, additional references may be required during the autumn term. The writer/translator will work remotely, with materials delivered by email. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to produce a test reference, which may be followed by an interview in person or by phone in June 2019 (the date and time of the interview would be communicated by email). Successful applicants will be required to sign an agreement for educational services which includes data protection safeguards and obligations from the writer/translator.

The person will work under the direction of the Careers Office (CIO) administrator, reporting to Simon McNaught, Deputy Headmaster and Head of UCAS.

Main duties:

  • Creating references for student applications to UK and US universities to UCAS and school guidelines by translating and adapting from original French and English documents
  • Checking the references to ensure 100% accuracy

  • An excellent level of written English with the ability to write persuasively and creatively
  • An excellent level of understanding of formal French
  • Proven IT skills (MS Word)
  • Attention to detail, organisation, self-motivation, patience, availability, and a commitment to respect the confidentiality of references are essential qualities
  • Ability to prioritise work to meet tight deadlines and to work under pressure from time to time
  • Previous experience of writing references is desirable but not essential
  • Knowledge of the French schooling system is desirable


Rate of pay: The payment rate is £40.58 per reference.

Working hours: The average time for preparing a reference is approximately 1 hour to 90 minutes, depending on the degree of complexity. The number of references is variable, between 15 and 40 per year.
